White-Backed MouseBird: South Africa


This is a social bird, with small groups of related birds feeding together and engaging in mutual feather cleansing.It roosts in groups at night.

Its perching habits are parrot-like: it often hangs from its legs with each one gripping a different branch  rather than squatting on their legs like most birds.


If holding mousebirds do not grab the tail, because the flight feathers come out so easily as to suggest that it is a sacrificial defence mechanism!
