Coccinellid comes from the Latin word coccineus meaning "scarlet".
Coccinellids are all over the world: there are more than 5,000 species recorded!
The name "ladybird" originated in Britain, where the insect was called 'Our Lady's bird' or the Lady beetle in relation to its seven spots and virgin Mary´s cloak.
