New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians named themselves after the native people of North America, to pay them respect for their help in escaping slavery; often Indians accepted slaves into their society when they made a break for freedom.

The KLOPSE (clubs) or Kaapse Klopse takes place on the 2nd of January. 
Participants are typically from Afrikaan speaking working class "coloured" or mixed race families who have preserved this tradition since the mid-19th century.


The minstrel show, or minstrelsy, was an American entertainment consisting of music, comic and variety acts and  dancing performed by white people in a blackface or, especially after the USA Civil Warblack people in blackface?!

 It originally comes from the winter rainfall area of the Western Cape mainly along the coastal belt. It grows actively during Winter and Spring.

Orbea elegans Plowes is the most recently described species and it´s listed as Critically Endangered.
O. namaquensis
Orbea namaquensis. It´s restricted to Namaqualand in the northwestern corner of South Africa.
